Tesla Launches Model Y in India Starting at Rs 60 Lakh

Tesla has officially announced the pricing of its first electric vehicle for the Indian market. The Model Y SUV will debut with a starting price of Rs 60 lakh for the base rear-wheel drive version. The long-range rear-wheel drive variant will be priced at Rs 68 lakh. These are for fully imported units and reflect the high import duties and logistics costs in India.

In comparison, the Model Y starts at $44,990 in the United States, 263,500 yuan in China, and 45,970 euros in Germany. This makes the Indian pricing one of the highest globally.

Tesla has chosen Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex as the location for its first experience centre in India. This premium business district will be the company’s initial touchpoint for customers in the country.

The entry into India is part of Tesla’s global strategy to expand in emerging electric vehicle markets. Although India’s EV adoption is still growing compared to China and the United States, increasing consumer interest, supportive government policies, and developing infrastructure have made the country an attractive destination for EV manufacturers.

Tesla is expected to import the Model Y from its Gigafactory in Shanghai, which serves as its main export hub for Asia and Europe. So far, six units of the SUV have arrived in India for testing and display purposes.

Import data shows that Tesla has already shipped goods worth nearly $1 million to India in preparation for the launch. These include Supercharger equipment, accessories, and vehicles, mainly sourced from its facilities in China and the United States.

Since the Model Y is being sold as a completely built unit, it will face heavy customs duties, pushing the price higher for Indian buyers. Unlike other markets where Tesla benefits from local manufacturing or assembly, Indian customers will pay a premium due to import-related expenses.
