Adani Group to Revive Kolkata’s Iconic Kumartuli Ghat

In a major step to protect Kolkata’s cultural identity, the Adani Group has partnered with Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata to restore the historic Kumartuli Ghat. Known for its rich tradition of clay idol making, Kumartuli is home to generations of skilled artisans and plays a vital role in Bengal’s festive culture.

On Friday, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port and Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd for the redevelopment and beautification of Kumartuli Ghat along the Hooghly River. The project comes under the port’s Swachhata initiative and focuses on cleaning, restoring and improving access to the ghat for artisans, locals and tourists.

The collaboration reflects a public-private partnership aimed at restoring this iconic riverfront while ensuring environmental sustainability and preserving its cultural essence.

“This is not just a restoration project, but a revival of Bengal’s artistic legacy,” said Rathendra Raman, Chairman of Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port.

Subrat Tripathy, President of Business Development at Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd, added, “It was an honour to help renovate a place so sentimentally linked to Kolkata’s identity. This spot will be a source of pride for Kolkata as a tourist destination.”

According to officials, the development will be limited to the Kolkata port area. Design architects have already been appointed and are currently working on the project layout.

For years, Kumartuli Ghat has suffered due to neglect, erosion of the riverbank, waste management issues and poor infrastructure. This redevelopment is expected to give a new life to one of Kolkata’s most iconic and culturally rich locations.
