McDonald’s has announced that Valerie Ashbaugh will take over as Chief Information Officer (CIO) and Senior Vice President for McDonald’s USA starting August 1. This move is part of a broader leadership transition aimed at strengthening the company’s technology capabilities and driving long-term growth across the system.
Ashbaugh is widely regarded as a transformational leader with a solid track record in digital innovation. Her experience spans several industries, including retail, athletic fashion, aerospace, and high-tech sectors. Within McDonald’s, she has played a key role in reshaping consumer and restaurant platforms, unifying global systems, and rolling out new features such as loyalty programs, “Ready on Arrival,” expanded ordering options, and Sesame — McDonald’s most stable and reliable point-of-sale system to date.
Under her leadership, the company has also seen major advances in artificial intelligence. She has overseen the development and integration of AI tools that are currently in rapid prototyping and testing stages. Ashbaugh also spearheaded a major tech overhaul by adopting a product-based operating model and building a modern engineering team, including the expansion of engineering talent in Mexico and India to support innovation and faster delivery of new capabilities.
Her leadership style is noted for being authentic and people-focused, consistently driving operational success while fostering collaboration across global teams. In her new role, Ashbaugh will lead the U.S. technology function, applying her international experience and deep product knowledge to elevate McDonald’s digital strategy and execution in the U.S. market.
