Elon Musk-led Tesla is all set to mark its official entry into the Indian market with the launch of its first retail showroom in Mumbai. The company will open the doors to its maiden Indian outlet on July 15, over 16 years after it launched its first-ever showroom in Los Angeles in 2008. Since then, Tesla has grown rapidly with nearly 400 retail outlets worldwide, spread across 35 countries in regions such as the US, Europe, and the Asia Pacific.
The new Indian showroom will be located at Maker Maxity in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), one of Mumbai’s most upscale areas. Interestingly, this location is also close to Apple’s first physical store in India. Tesla has reportedly leased around 4,000 square feet of space here. The showroom will function as an experience centre where potential buyers can explore Tesla’s electric vehicles up close and learn more about the brand.
Media reports suggest that Tesla may start taking customer orders from the showroom shortly after the launch, with the possibility of vehicle deliveries beginning as early as August or later this year.
However, buyers should be prepared for steep prices. Tesla cars imported from the US or China will attract a 70% import duty along with other taxes. For instance, the base variant of the Model Y, priced at $31,998 (approximately ₹27.7 lakh), is expected to cost between ₹50–55 lakh after including import duties. Additional charges like GST, road tax, registration fees, and insurance may take the final price above ₹60 lakh.
While the Mumbai store is the first step, Tesla also has plans to open a second showroom in Delhi. However, there are currently no confirmed plans to set up a manufacturing or assembly plant in India. This means that Tesla vehicles will continue to be imported and will remain significantly more expensive compared to locally manufactured electric vehicles.
With this launch, Tesla is finally making its long-awaited entry into one of the world’s largest automobile markets.
