Karnataka Upa Lokayukta Targeted in Cyber Scam Attempt

In a concerning case of cybercrime, the Karnataka Police have registered an FIR against two individuals for attempting to defraud Karnataka Upa Lokayukta Justice K.N. Phaneendra. The complaint, lodged at the Central CEN Crime Police Station in Bengaluru, has led to a formal case under Sections 66(D) and 84(C) of the Information Technology Act, 2008.

The accused have been identified as Deepak Kumar Sharma and Rahul Kumar Sharma. As per the FIR, Justice Phaneendra received a suspicious call on July 7 around 1 p.m. The caller, introducing himself as Deepak Kumar Sharma, claimed to be a legal consultant. He also introduced Rahul Kumar Sharma as his junior and said they worked for a Mumbai-based agency named the Data Protection Board of India.

During the call, Deepak claimed that Justice Phaneendra’s Aadhaar number was linked to a mobile number allegedly being used for illegal activities. The judge immediately asked for an official notice but, sensing something was wrong, reported the incident to the cyber police. A search operation is now underway to trace and arrest the suspects.

In a separate incident reported from Tumakuru district, another cybercrime case has left a government employee with a massive financial loss. On December 24, 2024, B.S. Nagabhushan, a resident of Upparahalli and a government staffer, was duped of ₹19 lakh by cybercriminals after being held in a “digital arrest” for six hours.

The victim received a call from someone claiming to be an officer from the Mumbai Crime Branch, who alleged illegal transactions from Nagabhushan’s bank account. The caller also claimed that a duplicate SIM card in the victim’s name was being used to harass others. The cyber fraudsters threatened legal action, seizure of property, and arrest, which led to the victim complying under pressure. A police complaint has been registered in the case.
