Thailand’s top police official, Pol Gen Kittiratt Phanphet, Commissioner-General of the Royal Thai Police, recently completed an important official visit to Japan aimed at strengthening international cooperation to tackle cybercrime, call centre fraud, and human trafficking.
Pol Lt Gen Archayon Kraithong, spokesperson for the Royal Thai Police, confirmed that Pol Gen Kittiratt, along with Police General Thatchai Pitaneelabutr, Inspector General, and a delegation, visited Japan from July 6 to 9.
During the trip, the Thai police chief paid a courtesy visit to Yoshinobu Kusunoki, Commissioner General of Japan’s National Police Agency. The two leaders discussed closer collaboration in fighting cross-border crimes, especially online scams, cyber threats, and organised call centre gangs.
Pol Gen Kittiratt also thanked his Japanese counterpart for giving initial approval to post a Thai police liaison officer in Japan. This step is expected to boost direct communication and intelligence sharing between the two countries.
The Thai delegation visited several important law enforcement sites in Japan. At Shinjuku Police Station, Japan’s largest, they observed operations in key departments, including the Emergency Call Centre and the Organised Crime Investigation Division.
They also held detailed discussions with Hideaki Oita, Director of Cybercrime Investigations, focusing on cybercrime strategies and investigative methods. The team was given insights into how Japan’s Technology Data Analysis Unit handles digital evidence, including data from phones, hard drives, and vehicles.
Another highlight of the visit was the delegation’s tour of the Cyber Attack Countermeasure Centre, which plays a critical role in tracking and responding to cyber threats nationwide.
In addition to cybercrime, Pol Gen Kittiratt and his team met with Witchu Vejjajiva, Thailand’s Ambassador to Tokyo, to discuss wider concerns such as illegal immigration, human trafficking, and travel issues involving Thai nationals in Japan and Japanese tourists in Thailand.
The Royal Thai Police believe the visit will be highly beneficial. Insights gained from discussions with Japanese officials and observations of their advanced policing systems are expected to help raise the standards of Thai law enforcement.
The focus on improving operations, particularly in areas like cybercrime, call centre scams, and human trafficking, is seen as a step forward in the Royal Thai Police’s mission to better protect the public.
