Daimler Truck to Cut 5,000 Jobs in Germany by 2030

Daimler Truck has announced plans to cut around 5,000 jobs in Germany by the year 2030 as part of a major cost-saving strategy. The decision follows a 5 percent drop in second-quarter sales, with particularly weak performance in the US market.

The German commercial vehicle manufacturer reported a decrease in deliveries to 106,715 trucks and buses, down from 112,195 units in the same period last year. This decline has pushed the company to roll out a program called “Cost Down Europe,” aimed at improving profitability and strengthening the resilience of its Mercedes-Benz Trucks business.

Daimler Truck stated that the program is expected to achieve annual savings of more than 1 billion euros by 2030. These savings will be focused on reducing costs related to personnel, materials, administrative processes, IT infrastructure, and research and development.

An agreement with the central works council was reached in May, outlining a socially responsible workforce reduction plan. This includes efforts to avoid compulsory redundancies until the end of 2034. Most of the job reductions are expected to occur through natural attrition and early retirement. However, targeted severance packages may also be considered.

The job cuts will primarily affect the truck division’s Stuttgart location, which had approximately 28,000 employees at the end of 2024. Daimler Truck currently employs around 35,500 people across Germany, with operations in Gaggenau, Kassel, Mannheim, Stuttgart, and Wörth. The Wörth plant is the largest truck assembly facility in Europe.

Daimler Truck was officially separated from its former parent company in 2021, continuing with the Mercedes-Benz Trucks brand for its medium and heavy-duty truck segments in Europe and other global markets.
