Akasa Air Reports ₹1,983 Crore Loss in FY25

Akasa Air reported a standalone net loss of approximately ₹1,983 crore in the financial year 2024–25, marking an 18.7 percent year-on-year increase. The loss was mainly driven by a sharp rise in employee expenses, aircraft maintenance, airport charges, and foreign exchange costs, according to sources familiar with the matter.

While Akasa Air faced deeper financial setbacks, other major Indian carriers showed stronger performance during the same period. IndiGo remained profitable despite a slight drop in year-on-year profit. SpiceJet bounced back into profitability, and Air India reduced its losses and turned operationally profitable.

When asked about its FY25 results, an Akasa Air spokesperson stated that the airline does not respond to speculation, but clarified, “It is important to note that the foundational years of any airline are dedicated to investing in its people, fleet, training, operating infrastructure, and network, and hence no airline registers P&L (net) profits in these years. Running an airline is a business of fixed costs and needs some scale before we turn profitable. This is neither surprising nor unanticipated. Our robust business plan provides for these losses.”

The spokesperson also highlighted that Akasa Air remains “net cash positive” at the operational level and said, “Financially, we are ahead of our plans, and our investors have always believed in the long-term vision and fundamentals of Akasa.”

Since launching operations in August 2022, Akasa Air has experienced a 36 percent increase in employee costs in FY25. Maintenance expenses rose by 26.6 percent, airport charges jumped by 40.9 percent, and foreign exchange costs surged by 181 percent year-on-year.
