A 55-year-old management executive from Pune working at a multinational company lost Rs 11.26 lakh after falling victim to a cyber fraud scam involving a fake job offer for a vice-president role at a reputed German bank.
The incident came to light after the victim lodged a First Information Report at the Sinhagad Road police station. According to police, the fraud occurred between April 21 and June 12, when cyber criminals posed as senior HR executives of a global banking firm and lured the victim with a lucrative job offer.
The complainant said he first received a call in April from someone claiming to be the global HR head of the German bank. The caller said they were looking for a candidate for the vice-president position at their India operations. Soon after, executive was asked to transfer Rs 6,000 and Rs 21,000 for initial verification and interview processes.
In the last week of April, the fraudsters conducted an online interview and later informed the victim that he had been selected for the role. Following this, he was asked to make several more payments for documentation, job code creation, CTC negotiations, and other joining-related formalities.
Over the next few weeks, executive made 30 transactions, transferring money to at least five different mule bank accounts, all under the belief that the funds would be reimbursed once the appointment process was completed.
However, when executive began asking about his joining date, the phone numbers and email addresses used by the scammers became unreachable. Realising he had been cheated, he approached the police for help.
An officer from Sinhagad Road police station confirmed, “We have launched a probe into the mobile numbers and bank accounts used by the cyber criminals to carry out the fraud.”
Authorities are urging job seekers to verify the authenticity of employment offers and be cautious of any requests for money during recruitment processes.
