IndiGo, India’s largest airline by market share, has launched direct flights between Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport. The new service, which began on July 1, will operate three times a week using Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft.
This new international route is part of IndiGo’s wider global expansion plan under its international strategy titled ‘Towards New Heights and across New Frontiers’. It is also the airline’s second long-haul service, coming just one day after it started flights to Manchester.
“Spreading our wings further in Europe, we are delighted to launch our Mumbai–Amsterdam flights, connecting India to the world,” said Pieter Elbers, Chief Executive Officer of IndiGo. “We are committed to delivering a seamless and enhanced experience to our customers at great value, promoting direct traffic between India and Europe. This route will not only enhance connectivity for leisure, business, and student travellers, but deepen thriving partnership between India and the Netherlands—culturally, economically, and diplomatically. In collaboration with Schiphol Airport and other local partners, we look forward to welcoming our customers and providing them a hassle-free and enjoyable flying experience.”
Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport is one of the busiest aviation hubs in the world. Through this new connection, IndiGo aims to provide smooth onward travel options to Europe, North America, and Canada, while strengthening links to its domestic network of over 90 Indian destinations.
The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft used on this route are part of a damp lease agreement with Norse Atlantic Airways. Each aircraft features a dual-class configuration with 56 IndiGoStretch premium seats offering a 43-inch pitch in a 2x3x2 layout, and 282 economy seats in a 3x3x3 layout with a 31-inch pitch. All seats have personal screens with up to 300 hours of movies and TV shows. IndiGo also offers complimentary hot meals and beverages on board, featuring dishes from iconic Indian brands.
The airline began long-haul operations earlier this year with flights from Mumbai to Bangkok. Its fleet will grow further with Airbus A321XLRs arriving in 2025 and Airbus A350-900s from 2027, enabling wider reach into Europe, Asia, and beyond.
