A 70-year-old woman from central Mumbai lost approximately ₹1.15 crore to cyber scammers who impersonated Income Tax (I-T) officials over a span of six years, according to police reports on Wednesday.
The case was revealed on Monday (July 1) when the elderly woman, residing in the Worli area, lodged a complaint with the Dadar police. The victim initially received a call in May 2019 from a woman claiming to be an I-T official, who informed her that the department intended to return money belonging to her deceased husband, police stated.
The complainant was instructed to pay off “pending” taxes and various penalties associated with her husband’s name in order to retrieve his funds, the official noted. Trusting the caller, the woman began transferring money into the accounts provided by the scammers, he added.
Throughout the six years, the complainant spent over ₹1.15 crore across 50 transactions, yet she never received any funds from the “I-T Department”, he mentioned. Recently, the woman confided in her relatives about the situation, who informed her that she was being deceived by cybercriminals and encouraged her to report it to the police.
Following her complaint, the Dadar police have filed a case against unknown fraudsters and initiated an investigation, the official concluded.
