Cyber Cell Busts Nepal-Linked Fraud Gang in Pune

The Pune city cyber cell has arrested five individuals, including two Nepali citizens, for their involvement in a cyber fraud operation linked to international networks. The arrests were made from June 22 onwards following a detailed investigation.

The accused have been identified as Norbu Sherpa, 28, from Solukhumbu and Anag Noori Sherpa, 21, from Okhaldhunga in Nepal; Aniket Prasht Bhadale, 27, from Shivajinagar Gaothan; Sagar Gaikwad, 26, from Sinhagad Road; and Shivtej Gunjkar, 33, from Jambhulwadi.

The case came to light after a victim reported losing ₹60,20,000 in an online investment fraud and approached the cyber cell on April 19. Senior inspector Swapnali Shinde said the investigation revealed that the fraud money had been transferred to a current account belonging to Adiyogi Scrap and Waste Management. Aniket Bhadale, associated with the firm, was arrested on June 22. It was discovered that his bank account was being used by Sagar Gaikwad.

During questioning, Sagar disclosed that two Nepali nationals were helping cyber criminals by providing mule bank accounts and SIM cards. The accused were later found staying at a hotel in the Narhe area, where they were arrested.

Investigation officer Sangeeta Devkate stated, “The Nepali citizens frequently visited Pune and, with help from mediators, managed to acquire mule accounts and SIM cards which were then passed on to other cyber criminals.”

In the hotel raid, police recovered a large amount of evidence including 10 mobile phones, 10 pen drives, a bank swipe machine, four laptops, 55 cheque books from different banks, a CPU, 39 company stamps, two routers, 27 blank cheques, four hard disks, seven CDs/DVDs, 27 QR Codes, and a DVR.

The cyber cell continues to investigate deeper links to the international network involved in the fraud.
