The Indian government has launched an investigation into the possibility of Indian user data being part of a major global data breach, which has reportedly exposed sensitive information from around 16 billion digital accounts worldwide.
The ministry of electronics and information technology has directed the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team to assess the extent of Indian data in the leaked dataset. Cert-In has been instructed to reach out to intermediaries, data centres, private companies, and government organisations for details and to ensure compliance with cybersecurity incident reporting norms.
“Given the proportion of the global leak, it is very likely that the data of Indian citizens might be on the dataset,” an official stated. Cert-In is currently probing the matter, and Indian organisations have been asked to carry out internal checks and report any signs of breach.
Media reports have suggested that the leaked data includes user names, passwords, and personal information from platforms like Apple, Facebook, Google, GitHub, Telegram, and even government services.
The breach was uncovered by a cybersecurity research team led by Vilius Petkauskas. According to their findings, the leaked records were spread across 30 different databases and are believed to have been obtained using various types of infostealer malware.
“The datasets that the team uncovered differ widely. For example, the smallest, named after malicious software, had over 16 million records,” the report stated.
This is being considered one of the largest data leaks globally and raises serious concerns about digital security and data privacy. The government’s swift action to identify and address any potential risk to Indian citizens highlights the growing importance of cybersecurity in a highly connected digital landscape.
