WhatsApp has rolled out a new document scanning feature for Android beta testers, making it easier for users to scan and share documents directly within the app. This update brings Android users in line with iOS users, who have had access to this feature for several months.
The feature eliminates the need for third-party scanning apps by allowing users to convert captured images into PDF documents and share them instantly with their contacts. It streamlines the document-sharing process, making it quicker and more convenient to send scanned files without leaving the app.
The new feature was first seen in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.25.18.29 but was inactive during its early development phase. It is now being gradually released to a wider group of beta testers. Many users have reported gaining access after updating the app through the Google Play Store.
Once updated, users will see a new “Scan Document” option in the attachment menu, alongside the existing “Browse Documents” and “Choose from gallery” choices. Tapping this option activates the phone’s camera and allows users to scan documents directly.
WhatsApp provides both manual and automatic scanning modes. In manual mode, users can select the area of the document they want to scan. In automatic mode, WhatsApp detects the edges of the document on its own, offering a faster and more precise scanning experience.
In a related update, WhatsApp also introduced a new AI-powered feature that can summarise personal chats. Powered by Meta AI, this feature gives users a bullet-point summary of their conversations, helping them quickly understand the content of a chat before reading it in detail.
These updates show WhatsApp’s focus on making everyday communication and document handling simpler and more efficient for users.
