A 73-year-old retired medical officer from Jalgaon, Maharashtra, has become the latest victim of a “digital arrest” cyber fraud, losing a staggering ₹31.5 lakh. The elaborate scam involved fraudsters impersonating officials from the telecom department and the police.
According to the complaint, the officer was contacted by the scammers who falsely informed him that a criminal case had been registered against him in Delhi. They alleged his involvement in a ₹6.8 crore money laundering case, claiming he had received commission in a Delhi bank account.
The fraudsters then proceeded to place him under “digital arrest,” threatening him with a three-year jail sentence if he withheld any information. To lend credibility to their threats, they even shared a bogus arrest warrant.
Over a period spanning from June 16 to June 23, the scammers relentlessly coerced the complainant. They manipulated officer into redeeming all his investment money and subsequently transferring a total of ₹31.5 lakh into various beneficiary bank accounts through multiple online transactions.
Officer realized he had been defrauded after confiding in his son about the incident. A case has since been registered by the cyber crime police. The fraudsters are being investigated under sections 318 (cheating) and 336 (forgery) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with section 66D (cheating by personation by using computer resource) of the Information Technology Act.
