Major US Tech Firms Announce Mass Layoffs in 2025 Amid Cost-Cutting and AI Shift

Several leading U.S. technology giants, including Intel, Amazon, and Meta, have announced significant workforce reductions in 2025, a trend largely attributed to ongoing cost-cutting measures and a strategic pivot towards artificial intelligence (AI) and automation. These widespread layoffs signal a shifting landscape within the tech industry as companies optimize operations and reallocate resources.

Microsoft has initiated its third wave of layoff in 2025, impacting its sales division and various customer-facing roles. These latest reductions follow earlier workforce adjustments made by the company in May, reflecting a continuous effort to streamline operations.

Intel plans substantial layoffs within its Intel Foundry division, with an expected reduction of 15-20% of its global workforce, potentially affecting over 10,000 employees. These cuts are slated to begin in July 2025 as the chipmaker realigns its manufacturing strategies.

Amazon anticipates ongoing workforce reductions as the e-commerce and cloud computing behemoth continues to integrate generative AI technologies across its vast operations. This suggests that automation driven by AI will increasingly influence the company’s staffing needs.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is also continuing its restructuring efforts. The company has announced layoffs within its Reality Labs division, which focuses on virtual and augmented reality. Furthermore, Meta began laying off approximately 5% of its overall workforce starting February 10, 2025, as part of a broader push for efficiency.

These mass layoffs across the tech sector highlight a strategic emphasis on adopting advanced AI and automation to enhance efficiency, potentially leading to leaner organizational structures. While these changes are driven by business imperatives, they underscore a challenging period for many employees within the industry.
