Dubai’s ruler and prime minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, announced a number of reforms to the UAE government on Friday.
He stated that beginning in January 2026, the National Artificial Intelligence System will serve as an advising member of the UAE Cabinet.
Additionally, he declared that the Ministry of Economy would now be known as the Ministry of Economy and Tourism, led by Abdulla bin Touq, and that the Ministry of Foreign Trade would be established, with Dr. Thani Al Zeyoudi serving as its minister.
“We also announce that the National Artificial Intelligence System will be adopted as an advisory member of the Cabinet, the Ministerial Development Council, and all boards of directors of federal entities and government companies, starting in January 2026,” Sheikh Mohammed wrote on X.
“The goal is to support decision-making in these councils, conduct immediate analyses of their decisions, provide technical advice, and enhance the efficiency of government policies adopted by these councils across all sectors.”
“The world is going through comprehensive restructuring, scientifically, economically and socially and our goal is being ready today for the coming decades and ensuring continuing prosperity and a decent life for the following generations,” he added.
Building on a legacy of innovation
For a while now, AI has been central to UAE strategy. Omar Al Olama, the first Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence in history, was appointed by the Emirates in October 2017. He now holds the position of Minister of State for AI, Digital Economy, and Applications for Remote Work.
In order to become one of the top AI countries by 2031, the UAE subsequently established the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy 2031 in early 2019.
The Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, the world’s first graduate-level, research-based university devoted to AI, was founded in the same year. Abu Dhabi also unveiled its Digital Strategy 2025-2027 in January, with the goal of becoming the emirate the first government in the world to run entirely on artificial intelligence by 2027.
