Helm.ai Vision, a camera-based system that interprets urban settings, was revealed by Honda Motor Company on Thursday. The company also said that it is in discussions with other automakers to use its self-driving technology in mass-market automobiles.
The Japanese manufacturer and Helm.ai are collaborating to include Helm.ai’s technology into the 2026 Honda Zero series of electric cars, enabling drivers to take their eyes off the road and drive hands-free.
“We’re definitely in talks with many OEMs and we’re on track for deploying our technology in production,” Helm.ai CEO and founder Vladislav Voroninski told Media.
“Our business model is essentially licensing this kind of software and also foundation model software to the automakers.”
Since alternative sensors like lidar and radar may be more expensive, the California-based startup’s vision-first strategy is in line with Elon Musk’s Tesla, which also uses camera-based technology.
Although Helm.ai has foundation models that function with various sensors, Voroninski stated that its core product is still vision-focused.
Since cameras are known to function poorly in low visibility situations, industry experts suggest that additional sensors are essential to safety.
Radar, lidar, and cameras are used by robotaxi startups like May Mobility and Alphabet’s Waymo to sense their environment.
Goodyear Ventures, Korean car parts manufacturer Sungwoo HiTech, and Amplo are among the investors in Helm.ai, which has received $102 million thus far.
The business claimed that by combining photos from many cameras, Helm.ai Vision produces a map of the vehicle’s aerial perspective, which enhances its planning and control capabilities.
The system is tailored for a number of hardware platforms manufactured by companies such as Qualcomm and Nvidia.
This makes it possible for automakers to integrate Helm.ai Vision into their current car systems, which include their in-house technology for maneuver prediction and planning.
