L&T Takes Major Step Towards Clean Energy Future with Green Hydrogen and Ammonia Projects in Gujarat

In a powerful stride toward sustainability, Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has acquired land at Kandla Port in Gujarat to establish state-of-the-art facilities dedicated to green hydrogen and green ammonia production. This move reflects the company’s commitment to building a cleaner future and supports India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, which promotes hydrogen as an alternative fuel, particularly in the transportation sector.

S N Subrahmanyan, Chairman and Managing Director of L&T, shared that the company is making steady progress in advanced energy domains, especially green hydrogen and small modular reactors (SMRs). He highlighted that electrolyser manufacturing is already in motion, granting L&T a head start in this emerging field.

“A landmark development was the regulatory approval from the US Department of Energy for the transfer of SMR technology to India,” he said. L&T is now one of only three Indian firms granted this privilege, enabling it to take a leadership role in commercialising nuclear energy.

The new Kandla facility will not only support green hydrogen and ammonia output but also allow L&T to take on large-scale global projects in hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol production. The company has unveiled a ₹48,000 crore investment roadmap over the next decade to build six green ammonia plants, each with an annual production capacity of 300,000 tonnes. These plants are aimed at decarbonising industries and facilitating clean energy exports to Southeast Asia and Europe.

The company has already secured 500 acres of land and is collaborating with international players like McPhy Energy to design and manufacture alkaline electrolysers. Discussions are ongoing with global buyers to export green ammonia, further establishing India’s position as a sustainable energy hub.

These forward-looking projects not only demonstrate L&T’s resolve to cut carbon emissions but also position India at the forefront of the global green energy revolution. Through innovation, scale, and collaboration, the company is crafting a blueprint for a more sustainable tomorrow.
