Next-Gen Amrit Bharat 2.2 to Debut Soon in Kerala

Kerala is on the brink of welcoming a new wave of railway transformation with the arrival of the Amrit Bharat 2.2 train, a refined and future-ready version of the Amrit Bharat Express. Built with care at the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai and the Rail Coach Factory in Kapurthala, this latest model promises more than just mobility—it offers comfort, inclusion, and progress.

Unlike earlier versions, the Amrit Bharat 2.2 introduces air-conditioned coaches, specifically curated to make long-distance journeys easier for middle-income travellers. Each rake will carry at least three AC coaches, elevating passenger experience with climate-controlled interiors. These trains are designed to cover stretches of nearly 800 kilometers, running at a speed between 110 and 130 km per hour. Between 2025 and 2027, Indian Railways plans to roll out 100 such coaches, each enhanced with twelve thoughtful upgrades focused on passenger well-being.

The interiors have been reimagined to resonate with modern needs—ergonomic seating, elegant lighting, improved washrooms, practical charging points, mobile holders, and even a pantry car for onboard meals. These additions aim to serve long-haul passengers with a touch of care and convenience. Kerala, given its vital geographic and economic role, is at the heart of this rollout, and the state’s inclusion reflects its rising prominence in India’s evolving travel landscape.

Meanwhile, the Vande Bharat Sleeper series continues to push the envelope of luxury and functionality. Built by Bharat Earth Movers Limited, these upcoming overnight trains promise features like personal reading lamps with USB ports, public address systems, modular kitchens, and facilities tailored for the differently-abled. First Class AC coaches will even include hot showers for an elevated experience. Designed to operate at 160 km per hour and tested at speeds up to 180 km per hour, each train can host 823 travellers across AC 3 Tier, AC 2 Tier, and First Class.

Both Amrit Bharat 2.2 and Vande Bharat Sleepers reflect Indian Railways’ deeper mission—to modernize infrastructure, improve accessibility, and build a greener, more inclusive nation. As Kerala prepares to board this new train of transformation, it joins the rhythm of a country advancing steadily toward a connected and sustainable tomorrow.
