Reliance Power Joins Hands with Bhutan to Build Nation’s Largest Solar Plant Worth ₹2000 Crore

In a landmark move to advance renewable energy in South Asia, Reliance Power has entered a transformative partnership with Bhutan’s state-owned Green Digital Private Limited. The two entities have signed a pact to develop Bhutan’s most ambitious solar energy project to date — a 500 megawatt (MW) solar power facility, valued at an estimated ₹2000 crore.

This initiative is being developed as a balanced 50-50 joint venture between Reliance Power and Druk Holding and Investments (DHI), Bhutan’s primary government investment body. The agreement not only marks the largest private investment ever made in Bhutan’s solar sector but also deepens the clean energy cooperation between the two neighbouring nations.

Reliance Power, in an official note, stated, “The landmark solar investment in Bhutan underscores Reliance Group’s strategic focus on expanding its renewable energy portfolio, while reinforcing its long-term commitment to strengthening India-Bhutan economic cooperation.” The company further noted that its clean energy pipeline has now grown to 2.5 GWp in solar capacity and over 2.5 GWhr in battery energy storage systems (BESS), positioning it as India’s largest integrated player in this emerging green space.

The solar project is expected to serve not just Bhutan’s clean energy needs but also contribute surplus electricity to neighbouring regions like India. The power generated will be sold via a long-term arrangement with Green Digital, ensuring a sustainable and secure energy flow.

Reliance Power has already initiated the groundwork for construction, including a competitive bidding process to identify capable contractors. Simultaneously, discussions are underway with banks and financial institutions to secure funding for the massive undertaking.

“This milestone transaction highlights Reliance Power’s continued focus on capital deployment into high-impact, long-duration clean energy assets, while strengthening its strategic positioning in the regional power infrastructure space,” the statement added.

This solar mission follows an earlier agreement in October 2024, when Reliance Enterprises — a joint venture between Reliance Power Limited and Reliance Infrastructure Limited — partnered with DHI for renewable development. That deal also included the long-term execution of Bhutan’s 770 MW Chamkharchhu-I hydroelectric project, aligned with the country’s national energy roadmap.
