Info Edge CEO Hitesh Oberoi explains How AI will impact Indian job market and the business

Hitesh Oberoi, CEO and MD of Info Edge, the company that runs the job portal Naukri.com, has offered his thoughts on how AI is impacting the Indian labor market and their business in a series of postings on the social networking platform X. This comes as AI continues to transform sectors around the world.

In his essay, Oberoi shared his thoughts on how AI is changing job dynamics, how skill needs are changing, and what possibilities are developing in the AI-driven economy.

He emphasized that the main lesson is not necessarily a decrease in employment but rather a change in the nature of work, with new skills becoming more important.

Oberoi advised those looking for new employment to acquire skills that enhance AI rather than compete with it.

“For job seekers, the message is clear: Develop skills that complement AI rather than compete with it. Problem solving, creativity, domain expertise, and AI literacy will be far more valuable than routine skills that can be automated. Continuous learning is no longer optional,” he said.

Oberoi underlined that although AI is automating certain professions, it is also generating new ones, demonstrating that the effects of AI on employment are multifaceted.

He admitted that AI may slow the rise of recruiting in conventional IT services firms, especially for positions involving simple application development and testing.

He did note, though, that businesses will also actively seek out subject experts, prompt engineers, and AI implementation.

Addressing the broader market implications, Oberoi said that “Meanwhile, Global Capability Centers are expanding rapidly in India. These aren’t just cost arbitrage centers anymore—they are moving up the value chain and could become innovation hubs with AI at their core. GCCs may grow faster going forward, creating significant new job opportunities”.

The CEO also highlighted a possible change in the pay structure, pointing out that while traditional positions experience wage stagnation, AI-capable workers may earn 40–70% pay increases when switching professions. He issued a warning that a divided labor market may result from this widening gap.

In terms of strategy, Oberoi stated that “India has a unique opportunity in the global AI landscape.” He pointed out that if the nation quickly develops its environment for skill development, it might set itself up to become a worldwide center for AI talent.

Oberoi emphasized that artificial intelligence (AI) is a horizontal technology that affects a number of industries, such as financial services, healthcare, and education. He went on to say that sectoral difference is crucial since automation poses a greater risk to administrative, operational, and customer service positions.

Regarding the economic picture, Oberoi described the intriguing prospect that AI-driven productivity increases might allow India to achieve 6-7% GDP growth with fewer net new employment.

“AI could also help us grow faster as an economy and help create more jobs overall,” he further added.

Oberoi further stated that “companies won’t just hire differently — they will structure and organise differently.” He asserts that companies will do better than those that only use AI technologies if they change their whole operational paradigm.

He disclosed that Naukri.com has introduced new AI-powered data solutions at the organizational level to assist talent executives and CHROs in navigating this changing environment. In almost real time, these tools offer previously unheard-of data regarding skill trends, workforce availability, and pay standards.

In closing, Oberoi stated that Info Edge is actively getting ready for this change by implementing AI to improve search and matching algorithms on all of our platforms with the goal of greatly enhancing and customizing the user and customer experience.
