Seven people arrested by Assam Police claimed to have busted cybercrime racket

Assam Police claimed to have broken a network on Saturday that gave mobile phone connections to cybercriminals, including Pakistanis, so they could create WhatsApp accounts and trick people, leading to the arrest of seven persons.

‘Operation Ghost SIM’ was initiated on the basis of military intelligence information on a racket that operated with bases in Assam, Rajasthan, and Telangana, DGP Harmeet Singh stated during a news briefing.

“This information was further developed into actionable inputs by the Special Branch and Special Task Force of the Assam Police,” he said.

He stated that the arrests were made in parallel searches in two districts of Assam, one district of Telangana, and two districts of Rajasthan since Friday afternoon.

According to Singh, the racket gave Pakistani criminals WhatsApp accounts with Indian mobile numbers in addition to assisting them in obtaining new cell connections.

He claimed that although victims thought they were getting calls from Indian numbers, the calls were actually coming from Pakistan.

According to the DGP, those whose names the SIM cards were issued are among the 15 individuals being questioned.

Along with other electronic gadgets, he claimed, 948 SIM cards were confiscated.
