Wishing Mr. Didier Contis greater responsibilities and exciting challenges in this impressive new chapter!
The University of Wisconsin–Madison has appointed Didier Contis as its next Chief Information Officer (CIO) and Vice Provost for Information Technology. Contis will succeed Lois Brooks, who retired after serving as CIO since 2018. He will begin his new role on July 7.
With over 26 years of expertise in higher education IT leadership, Contis comes to UW–Madison from the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he most recently served as executive director for academic technology, innovation, and research computing. His vast experience encompasses securing research data, fostering collaborative partnerships across various academic and research divisions, and promoting equitable access to technology.
“Didier’s appointment signals an exciting new era for the university’s technology infrastructure and strategy,” says Provost Charles Isbell. “His experience and skills will be pivotal in helping us adapt to the ever-evolving landscape of technology while supporting our mission of teaching, research, and outreach.”
Contis shared his enthusiasm, saying, “UW–Madison’s dedication to improving lives across Wisconsin, the nation, and the world — alongside its ambitious focus on addressing complex, impactful challenges through the RISE initiative — makes this opportunity both inspiring and exciting. I’m honored to serve in this role and lead such a strong and thoughtful IT community.”
Contis began his tenure at Georgia Tech in 1999 as a research engineer and steadily advanced through various IT leadership positions, including chief information security officer and associate vice president for data strategy. His contributions include leading data protection efforts, securing grants for network security initiatives, and pioneering the creation of a large-scale virtual computer lab for students. He also co-authored an Educause Whitepaper and contributed to establishing a federated private academic cloud supporting research.
Contis earned a master’s degree in electrical engineering from Georgia Tech and a bachelor’s degree from the École des Mines de Nantes in France. As CIO, he will oversee the Division of Information Technology (DoIT), guiding nearly 600 employees and collaborating with the university’s faculty, staff, and students to shape and implement strategic IT plans aligned with UW–Madison’s goals.
