Ransomware assaults against Indian organizations are still on the rise in 2024. According to a recent Kaspersky study, companies in this area saw an average of 665 ransomware attempts every day.
As the name implies, ransomware is malicious software that encrypts data or prevents access to a computer system until a ransom is paid. Both people and businesses have been the targets of these attacks.
Between January and December of last year, a total of 243,548 ransomware assaults were identified and stopped by Kaspersky products utilized in Indian enterprises.
“Ransomware groups targeting organizations in India know no sector. From small banks to the most critical state infrastructure, history shows us that India is facing a relentless surge in ransomware attacks aimed at businesses, banks, and public services. Institutions and companies are now under increasing pressure to implement far stronger defenses to protect their critical data,” comments Adrian Hia, Managing Director for Asia Pacific at Kaspersky.
Trojan-Ransom was the most prevalent ransomware kind in India last year. Win32.Wanna.m. This kind of Trojan alters data on the victim’s computer, making it unusable, or it stops the machine from operating properly.
A demand for ransom will be sent to the user once the data has been “taken hostage” (blocked or encrypted). The ransom demand instructs the victim to submit money to the malicious user, who will then send the victim a software to restore the data or the computer’s functionality.
“Ransomware groups persist in refining their tactics, exploiting known vulnerabilities and leveraging advanced tools like Meterpreter and Mimikatz to gain unauthorized access. By targeting internet-facing applications, manipulating local accounts, and evading endpoint defenses, they demonstrate a sophisticated mastery of network weaknesses. The ongoing threat emphasizes the urgent need for robust cybersecurity defenses, as adversaries continue to innovate and exploit even the most familiar vulnerabilities,” adds Hia.
