Intel has named Indian-origin engineer Sachin Katti as its new Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and Head of AI as part of a strategic leadership change led by incoming CEO Lip-Bu Tan. This action represents a major turning point in Intel’s attempts to streamline its innovation activities and quicken its AI roadmap.
Greg Lavender, who was CTO from 2021 to 2025, is replaced by Katti. In his new position, Katti will direct Intel Labs, manage the company’s product pipeline, and drive Intel’s AI strategy. He will also be in charge of overseeing Intel’s interactions with developer ecosystems and entrepreneurs, which is an essential component of promoting innovation at the local level.
Katti, who has a strong history in both academics and entrepreneurship, oversaw Intel’s networking and edge computing division prior to this promotion. He is the creator of the firm Uhana, which aims to integrate real-time artificial intelligence into mobile networks. VMware later purchased Uhana. Katti is an IIT Bombay alumni and has been a professor at Stanford University for more than 15 years.
A larger organizational reorganization intended to give AI a more prominent position inside the organization is reflected in Intel’s choice to designate a specific CTO for AI. In the past, Intel’s data center business included AI projects. With Katti leading the charge to direct its development, the change now centers on AI.
Lip-Bu Tan, a seasoned veteran of the semiconductor business, was appointed as Intel’s CEO in March, coinciding with the leadership change. Tan replaced temporary co-CEOs David Zinsner and Michelle (MJ) Johnston Holthaus and is renowned for his revolutionary leadership approach. His hiring is viewed as a daring move to realign Intel in the face of fierce competition and current market difficulties.
Intel’s selection of Katti signifies a renewed emphasis on innovation and a sustained dedication to AI-led change.
