OpenAI in Talks to Acquire Windsurf in Landmark $3B Deal

OpenAI is negotiating to acquire Windsurf, an AI-driven coding platform, for approximately $3 billion, as reported by Media, citing a source familiar with the situation. If finalized, this would mark OpenAI’s largest acquisition to date. However, the report indicates that the agreement is not yet finalized and may still change or fall through.

OpenAI has not provided any comments regarding the news, and Windsurf, previously known as Codeium, has not responded to Media’s inquiries. In 2024, Windsurf secured $150 million in a funding round led by General Catalyst, which valued the company at $1.25 billion.

Interest in artificial intelligence has surged in recent years, particularly with the emergence of chatbots and advanced AI tools. In March, OpenAI announced plans to raise up to $40 billion in new funding, potentially increasing its valuation to $300 billion.

In 2023, OpenAI acquired a company named Global Illumination, which utilized AI to create innovative tools, although the financial details of that transaction were not disclosed. Windsurf is among several tools, including Cursor and Replit, that developers have recently adopted to “vibe code,” a term referring to the use of AI for rapid software coding, according to a media report. Earlier this month, Microsoft launched a similar feature called Agent Mode in its widely used coding tool, Visual Studio Code.
