In a strategic effort to increase its presence rapidly, IT giant Wipro launches a dedicated service line aimed at Global Capability Centers (GCCs). This initiative positions the Bengaluru-based company to support multinational corporations in launching and expanding their GCCs in India, an area where competitors like Infosys and Cognizant have already made significant progress.
The new service line will guide global clients through the entire process of establishing GCCs using the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model. Through this approach, Wipro will assist companies in setting up their capability centers, manage operations for a specified duration, and then transfer ownership back to the parent company. This strategy helps clients reduce initial risks and capital expenditures while leveraging Wipro’s extensive delivery and operational knowledge within the Indian IT sector.
Industry insiders report that the GCC model is rapidly gaining popularity, with India remaining a top choice for global companies seeking innovation, cost savings, and access to skilled talent. Wipro’s shift towards this segment coincides with the company’s reevaluation of its overall structure to better align with evolving client needs and market trends.
To spearhead the new GCC practice, Wipro is in the process of hiring a Global GCC Practice Head. This leader will be responsible for developing the practice from scratch and collaborating closely with Wipro’s existing market units and global business lines. The role is also expected to connect the firm with the wider ecosystem, engaging with clients, industry organizations, and partners to enhance Wipro’s visibility in the GCC sector.
In addition to leadership roles, Wipro is strengthening its frontline team by recruiting GCC Specialist Sales and Business Development Executives. These individuals will play a crucial role in building relationships with GCC center leaders, identifying new opportunities, and ensuring that Wipro’s services align with the changing needs of clients.
Wipro’s move into the GCC sector is a key element of its larger strategy to reorganize its operations into four new global business lines: cloud, enterprise technology and business transformation, engineering, and consulting. This restructuring aims to position Wipro for success in rapidly growing markets and enable the company to provide more targeted and effective services.
Analysts have observed that the global capability center model is becoming increasingly important for the transformation strategies of multinational companies. By investing in a BOT-based service line, Wipro is entering a lucrative market projected to be worth billions in the coming years.
With over 1,500 GCCs currently functioning in India and more anticipated to emerge soon, Wipro’s renewed emphasis on this area could help it narrow the competitive gap with its rivals and reinforce its reputation as a leading IT services provider that can offer comprehensive, strategic value to global businesses.
As competition in the GCC sector heats up, Wipro’s success in executing this vision will be crucial for its next growth phase.
