Financial frauds top list of cyber crimes; we need tech-savvy police: Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis

Mumbai: On Monday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis highlighted that financial frauds are the most prevalent form of cyber crime, followed by threats and sexual offenses. He emphasized the importance of police being “technology-savvy” to effectively address these issues. Fadnavis made these remarks during a Mumbai Police event where he launched the Nirbhaya Cyber Lab at the D B Marg police station.

Additionally, he virtually inaugurated several other initiatives, including the Central Region Cyber Police Station in Worli, the East Cyber Police Station in Govandi, forensic vans for female victims, and equipment such as interceptor and speed guns to monitor speeding vehicles.

Currently, 87 police stations in Mumbai have established dedicated cells for women and child assistance, which Fadnavis also inaugurated virtually.

As the head of the state home department, the Chief Minister commended the city police for their effectiveness in combating cyber crimes.

“The Mumbai Police started three centres for cyber security, and I will say these are centres of excellence where advanced technology has been used,” he said.

“In cyber crimes, financial frauds are at the top, offences like threatening and extortion are at the second place and sexual crimes at the third spot,” Fadnavis said.

The prompt resolution of these cases through the swift arrest of the suspects is crucial, he stated.

In a specific instance of cyber fraud, the victim suffered a loss of Rs 12 crore; however, the Mumbai Police acted promptly and managed to recover approximately Rs 11.20 crore, the Chief Minister noted.

“We are number one in digital transactions in the world, due to which vulnerability has also increased,” he said.

Although individuals have access to various platforms for digital transactions, this has also provided cybercriminals with opportunities to try to infiltrate financial gateways, though they have not been successful, he stated.

Fadnavis emphasized that criminal minds are actively seeking to commit cyber fraud and highlighted the importance of developing capabilities to combat these threats.

He predicted that cyber crimes will increase in the future, surpassing traditional street crimes. In addressing cyber crime, “we require a force that can effectively confront these criminals,” he remarked.

An offender in this domain possesses a strong understanding of the digital environment, which underscores the necessity for tech-savvy law enforcement, he noted. “The battle between them has already commenced,” the Chief Minister added.

“The best and most advanced technology labs are important, and I have seen the Mumbai Police’s capabilities in these labs,” he said.

The chief minister stated that this initiative will aid in effectively combating cyber criminals.

Fadnavis mentioned that five cyber labs are planned for the city, expressing optimism that these facilities will assist in addressing cyber crimes targeting women.

The event was attended by Minister of State for Home Yogesh Kadam, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Iqbal Singh Chahal, Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar, and other high-ranking police officials.
