Google and Sphere Announce Technology Partnership and Reveal New Details on the AI Technology Behind Upcoming The Wizard of Oz at Sphere

In a historic collaboration, Google and Sphere Entertainment have joined forces to bring an all-new, immersive version of The Wizard of Oz to life, using cutting-edge generative AI. The project, set to open in Las Vegas on August 28, 2025, promises to be a revolutionary moment in entertainment, blending timeless storytelling with the latest in AI technology.

This partnership taps into the power of Google Cloud and Google DeepMind, deploying advanced AI models like Gemini, Veo 2, and Imagen 3. These tools are enhancing the classic 1939 film’s resolution, extending backgrounds, and even digitally recreating beloved characters, expanding the iconic film in ways never seen before. “The power of generative AI, combined with Google’s infrastructure and expertise, is helping us to achieve something extraordinary,” said the CEO of Sphere Entertainment. The project is processing 1.2 petabytes of data, showcasing the massive scale of this endeavor.

The immersive experience is designed to push boundaries, much like how The Wizard of Oz itself revolutionized cinema with Technicolor nearly 90 years ago. With Sphere’s cutting-edge 16k x 16k resolution LED screen, this new version of the film will captivate audiences with visuals enhanced by Google’s AI. “We are honored to play a role in such an ambitious project to bring a classic piece of Americana to an entirely new generation of audiences,” shared the CEO of Google Cloud.

Google’s Gemini models and AI tools like Veo and Imagen are being used for sophisticated processes like super resolution, where missing pixels are filled in to create ultra-crisp imagery. Outpainting allows the team to extend scenes, expanding the film’s scope for Sphere’s massive display. The performance generation capabilities ensure that characters stay on screen for longer, enhancing the immersion. Gemini and Veo’s extra-long context window capabilities ensure that the enhanced visuals remain consistent throughout the film’s extended sequences.

This groundbreaking collaboration between Google and Sphere is not just about showcasing a film, but reimagining the future of visual storytelling.
