Google is adopting competitor Anthropic’s standard for linking AI models to data storage platforms, only weeks after OpenAI said it will do the same.
Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol, or MCP, will be supported by Google’s Gemini models and SDK, according to a post made by Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis on X on Wednesday. He made no mention of when this will be completed.
“MCP is a good protocol and it’s rapidly becoming an open standard for the AI agentic era,” wrote Hassabis. “Look forward to developing it further with the MCP team and others in the industry.”
MCP lets models draw data from sources like business tools and software to complete tasks, as well as from content repositories and app development environments. The protocol enables developers to build two-way connections between data sources and AI-powered applications, such as chatbots.
Developers may create “MCP clients”—such as applications and workflows—that connect to such servers on command and disclose data through “MCP servers.” Companies including Block, Apollo, Replit, Codeium, and Sourcegraph have added support for MCP to their platforms in the months since Anthropic made the protocol publicly available.
