The Karnataka Lokayukta police have detained a senior Bengaluru police officer and his subordinate for allegedly receiving a payment of Rs 2 lakh to investigate a cybercrime. This is the first instance of a senior official from the cybercrime section being apprehended for bribery.
Police Assistant Commissioner A businessman named Madhusudhan B S submitted a complaint, leading to the arrest of Assistant Sub-Inspector Krishna Murthy and Tanveer S R of the Northeast CEN police station. He went to the police station on February 26 to report that his firm had suffered financial losses as a result of someone hacking his website’s login credentials, making it appear to be a phony corporation, and posting offensive statements.
Madhusudhan thought Monish, a former employee, may be responsible for the hack. The two Bengaluru police officer sought Rs 4 lakh while he asked the police to arrest Monish. The merchant said that Tanveer and Murthy ultimately agreed to pay an advance of Rs 2 lakh. He informed the Lokayukta police, who set up a trap after becoming suspicious of their intentions.
Madhusudhan and ASI Murthy met on Tuesday night at a prearranged spot in RT Nagar. A Lokayukta squad under the leadership of DySP Thippeswamy apprehended Murthy immediately after the money was transferred. Soon after, ACP Tanveer was taken into custody.
“Arrest procedures have been completed and further investigations are ongoing,” an official said.
