Google to Buy Wiz for $32 Billion to Boost Cloud Security

Alphabet, the parent company of Google, has announced an agreement to acquire Wiz, a leading cloud security company, for a massive $32 billion in cash. This acquisition comes just under a year after negotiations initially fell apart when Wiz chose to remain independent. However, with the deal now confirmed, Wiz will become part of Google Cloud once all regulatory approvals are in place, which is expected to happen next year.

The agreement marks Alphabet’s largest acquisition ever, surpassing any previous purchases. Last year, Wiz turned down a $23 billion offer from Google after several months of talks. At the time, Wiz decided it could achieve more value through a potential IPO and expressed concerns about the regulatory hurdles that the deal might face.

Shares of Alphabet fell almost 3% in response to the announcement on Tuesday. Despite this, the acquisition is being touted as a major step forward in strengthening Google’s cloud security capabilities. The deal is one of the biggest mergers and acquisitions of 2025, and it reflects the increasing importance of cloud security in the tech world.

Alphabet’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, explained the reasoning behind the acquisition, stating, “AI brings new risks, but also new opportunities. Organisations are looking for cybersecurity solutions that improve cloud security and span multiple clouds.” The rise of artificial intelligence has created new challenges for cloud security, and Wiz’s expertise is seen as crucial for Google to stay competitive in this evolving landscape.

The deal comes at a time when mergers and acquisitions in the tech industry are ramping up after a brief slowdown. However, external factors like global trade tensions and political instability have made some companies hesitant to move forward with deals. Despite these challenges, Google has chosen to push ahead with its plans, viewing Wiz’s technology as essential for bolstering its cloud security offerings.

With the regulatory process ahead, the deal could close by next year, positioning Google Cloud to expand its reach and strengthen its cybersecurity infrastructure at a critical time.
