Primetals Technologies Appoints Yoshiharu Ikeda as New CEO, Enhancing Leadership with CFO and COO Changes

Primetals Technologies has officially named Yoshiharu Ikeda as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), succeeding Satoru Iijima, who will remain a Director of the Board and Fellow Advisor. Ikeda, with decades of experience in the metals industry, is recognized for his strong leadership in both commercial and strategic roles, particularly in the machinery sector.

Satoru Iijima shared his excitement about Ikeda’s appointment: “Yoshiharu Ikeda has spent decades advancing organizations within the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Group, and we are thrilled to welcome him as the new CEO of Primetals Technologies. He is an exceptional leader who will support our vision of being the pioneer and global leader in the metals industry.”

Ikeda’s journey in the metals industry began in the mid-80s at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, where he held numerous global leadership roles, including Manager of Global Sales at Mitsubishi-Hitachi Metals Machinery and CEO of Primetals Technologies USA. Prior to becoming CEO, Ikeda served as CFO at Primetals Technologies.

Ikeda commented, “The metals industry is in an interesting and at the same time challenging phase. Working with customers globally, our role is to innovate the industry and redefine how sustainable metals are produced. This applies to both upstream projects like HYFOR and Smelter, as well as the downstream area, including the electrification of furnaces in rolling mills and the groundbreaking Arvedi ESP technology. Additionally, digitalization is a critical part of our innovation in areas such as digital decarbonization, emissions monitoring, robotics, and process optimization.”

He continued, “Primetals Technologies is an international community of over 7,000 metals engineers and specialists. Together, we take on these challenges, and I look forward to being part of this journey.”

In addition to Ikeda’s appointment, Andreas Weinhengst will take over as CFO on April 1, 2025. Weinhengst has extensive metals industry experience, having served as CFO of Primetals Technologies Austria since 2018. Additionally, Karl Purkarthofer will assume the newly created role of Chief Operating Officer (COO), effective with the new financial year. Purkarthofer brings decades of leadership experience from roles in Austria, the US, and the UK.
