Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has begun testing its first in-house AI chip specifically designed for training artificial intelligence (AI) systems. This initiative represents a key step in Meta’s efforts to develop custom silicon, potentially decreasing its reliance on external suppliers like Nvidia. If the testing proves successful, Meta intends to ramp up production of this AI chip for wider use.
Meta’s initiative to create custom chips aims to reduce AI-related costs. A Media report indicates that this custom AI chip is part of Meta’s broader strategy to lower infrastructure expenses as the company invests heavily in AI technologies. The report also mentions that Meta anticipates spending between USD 114 billion and USD 119 billion in 2025, with as much as USD 65 billion earmarked for AI infrastructure. The new chip, characterized as a dedicated accelerator, is expected to enhance efficiency in AI training tasks compared to conventional GPUs.
In collaboration with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), Meta is working on the production of this AI training chip. The testing phase has commenced following the completion of the first ‘tape-out,’ a crucial step in AI chip design where an initial prototype is sent for manufacturing. However, the journey to develop custom AI chips is fraught with challenges; Meta had previously abandoned a similar project after facing failures during initial testing phases. Despite these challenges, Meta successfully launched an AI inference chip in 2024, which optimized content recommendations on Facebook and Instagram. The company aims to expand its chip capabilities to support generative AI applications, including its chatbot, Meta AI, by 2026.
Meta continues to be a major client of Nvidia, investing billions in GPUs for AI training and inference. Yet, as discussions among AI researchers focus on the scalability of large language models, companies such as Meta are exploring different strategies.
