Airtel Partners with SpaceX to Bring Starlink Internet to India

In a groundbreaking move, Airtel has entered into a partnership with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to bring Starlink’s high-speed satellite internet services to India. This agreement, which marks the first of its kind in the country, is contingent on SpaceX obtaining the necessary authorizations to offer Starlink services within India.

According to Airtel’s statement, the collaboration will explore various avenues, including the sale of Starlink equipment through Airtel’s retail outlets. Additionally, both companies plan to offer Starlink services to business clients, schools, health centers, and even rural communities across India, where internet access has often been limited.

“Working with SpaceX to offer Starlink to Airtel customers in India is a significant milestone and further demonstrates our commitment to next-generation satellite connectivity,” said Gopal Vittal, Managing Director and Vice Chairman of Bharti Airtel Ltd.

Starlink, a satellite-based internet system developed by SpaceX, aims to provide high-speed internet services globally, especially in underserved and remote areas. The service supports activities such as video streaming, online gaming, video calls, and remote working, making it a game-changer for users in hard-to-reach locations.

Mr. Vittal further emphasized, “This collaboration enhances our ability to bring world-class high-speed broadband to even the most remote parts of India, ensuring that every individual, business, and community has reliable internet. Starlink will complement and enhance Airtel’s suite of products to ensure reliable and affordable broadband for our Indian customers—wherever they live and work.”

SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell also shared her excitement about the partnership, stating, “We are excited to work with Airtel and unlock the transformative impact Starlink can bring to the people of India. We are constantly amazed by the incredible and inspiring things that people, businesses, and organizations do when they are connected via Starlink.”

Airtel’s move comes at a time when rival Reliance Jio continues to dominate India’s broadband market with over 14 million wired subscribers and 500 million mobile internet users. Despite this, both Airtel and Jio are aware of the growing competition posed by satellite internet technologies like Starlink.
