Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Alvin Richards was appointed by the Gary Community School Corporation (GCSC). His hiring rounds up the school district’s leadership team, which is now independent and moving forward. As a seasoned IT executive and leader in digital transformation, Richards has over 20 years of experience advancing digital equality programs, infrastructure improvements, and technology modernization in the government, higher education, and K–12 sectors.
“Effective, cutting-edge technology is a critical piece to any successful school district,” said GCSC Superintendent Dr. Yvonne Stokes. “Our students and staff deserve devices and platforms that promote teaching and learning and yield measurable results in improvement. We are excited to have Mr. Richards aboard to lead this charge.”
Richards has a history of putting cutting-edge technological solutions into practice that improve operational effectiveness, instructor support, and student engagement. From spearheading district-wide technology strategies to launching cloud-based solutions, Learning Management Systems (LMS), and Student Information Systems (SIS), his work has continuously enabled school districts to thrive in the contemporary digital learning landscape. Notably, districts have benefited from his proficiency in instructional technology by using data analytics and automation to optimize financial workflows, administrative processes, and curriculum delivery.
Richards, a fervent supporter of educational justice, has led a number of efforts to close the digital divide, such as expanding broadband access for underprivileged communities and implementing one-to-one device programs. In order to make sure that every student and teacher has access to the tools they need to succeed, he has also implemented AI-powered systems to monitor student performance. As an adolescents Director, he has made a significant contribution to the community by providing technological training to assist close the skills gap in employment preparedness and mentoring inner-city adolescents.

Timothy and Chloe are Richards’s two children with his wife, India.
