As online fraud and emerging digital threats continue to affect the public, the Keralam government plans to strengthen cybercrime prevention and public awareness through the Kerala Police’s Cyber Safe Kerala initiative.
Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala announced the measures in the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday. He said a new dashboard is expected to be introduced in the 1st week of November, allowing the Home Minister’s Office to track daily FIR registrations at police stations and monitor their progress. An ‘HM Acts’ system will also be introduced to make information about police action more accessible to the public.
Focus on digital awareness and emerging threats
Responding to questions during Question Hour, Chennithala said the State’s high literacy rate did not necessarily mean people had strong digital literacy skills. This gap can leave even well-educated citizens vulnerable to online scams.
The government plans to expand awareness programmes, particularly for children, as a lack of knowledge about digital threats continues to contribute to online fraud. Its digital safety strategy will also address emerging crimes involving the misuse of artificial intelligence to create fake videos and images.
The Cyber Safe Kerala initiative will promote responsible digital behaviour and raise awareness about cyberbullying, fake news, online fraud, excessive gaming, social media misuse and personal data protection.
To extend these efforts to local communities, the government plans to involve students from 150 engineering colleges in awareness campaigns covering 1,200 villages.
Cyber Resilience Centres planned
The government is also taking steps to establish Cyber Resilience Centres with support from the police, academic institutions, industry and industry partners. These centres are intended to strengthen cooperation and improve cyber resilience.
Chennithala also expressed concern about children’s exposure to violent content, specifically referring to Korean films. He highlighted the risks associated with excessive online gaming as part of the wider discussion on digital safety.
The proposed dashboard, public awareness campaigns and Cyber Resilience Centres form part of the State’s efforts to improve cybercrime prevention, strengthen public understanding of online threats and make police action more transparent.
