The University of California Office of the President (UCOP) has appointed Sharon Jamila Buckner as Interim Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO), bringing extensive experience in human resources leadership, talent management, employee relations and organisational transformation across higher education, nonprofit organisations and corporate sectors.
In her new role, Buckner will oversee UCOP’s human resources functions and provide strategic and operational leadership. Her responsibilities will include talent acquisition, employee and labour relations, workforce planning, organisational development, compensation and employee engagement.
Before joining UCOP, Buckner served as Vice Chancellor of Human Resources at Peralta Community College District, where she managed HR operations, employee relations and workforce strategies.
She previously held the position of Chief People Officer, Equity & Inclusion at SF-Marin Food Bank, leading people strategy, talent management, organisational development and inclusion initiatives.
Earlier in her career, Buckner served as Chief People Officer at Accion Opportunity Fund and Head of Human Resources at Golden Gate University. She also spent more than 7 years at Saint Mary’s College of California in senior HR leadership roles focused on recruitment, workforce management and organisational effectiveness.
Her broader professional experience includes leadership and consulting positions at Comcast, Liberty Mutual Insurance Group, Levi Strauss, Bank of America and Robert Half International.
In addition to her corporate and institutional experience, Buckner serves as Principal Consultant at Imani Leadership Consulting Services LLC, where she advises organisations on people strategy and HR transformation.
She holds a Master of Science in Human Resources from Golden Gate University. Her appointment brings extensive expertise in workforce strategy, people leadership and organisational development to the University of California’s systemwide administration.
