OpenAI has acquired Orchestra Bio, a platform that helps biopharmaceutical companies coordinate drug development, as it expands its presence in life sciences. The acquisition will combine Orchestra Bio’s technology and team with OpenAI’s Rosalind suite to help scientists manage complex research workflows and accelerate the development of new medicines.

The combined platform aims to connect scientific discoveries with the experiments, studies and decisions required to advance potential treatments. The move also seeks to extend AI’s role beyond research and analysis to the coordination of drug development activities.

OpenAI said developing a new medicine typically takes 10 to 15 years, from identifying a biological target to receiving regulatory approval in the United States. The process involves multiple internal teams and external partners working across different systems, making coordination a major challenge.

The company believes AI can help manage these complex workflows, identify potential delays and improve coordination across research and development programmes.

Orchestra Bio enables scientists and programme leaders to work alongside AI agents that monitor studies and track drug development activities. These agents can identify how problems in one area may affect other stages, gather relevant information and compare possible responses.

For example, a failed manufacturing batch could delay a clinical trial. Orchestra Bio’s agents can help identify the affected activities and timelines, allowing teams to assess available options and determine their next steps.

OpenAI’s Rosalind suite includes GPT-Rosalind, which helps scientists explore questions in biology and chemistry, and Rosalind Workbench, which connects AI capabilities with scientific tools and data to support analysis and experiment planning.

By combining the 2 platforms, OpenAI aims to help researchers move more efficiently from scientific discoveries to practical steps in developing potential medicines.

The company also highlighted its existing work with Novo Nordisk and Moderna. Its partnership with Novo Nordisk focuses on supporting faster research and development and commercial execution while maintaining governance. At Moderna, AI is helping teams turn insights from complex data into experimental workflows.

OpenAI said integrating Orchestra Bio with Rosalind represents another step towards applying AI across the drug development process, from exploring scientific ideas and designing experiments to interpreting results and coordinating subsequent activities.

The broader goal is to help scientists make discoveries more efficiently and support the development of promising medicines that could reach patients sooner.
