SSB urges personnel to guard against online scams and cyber threats

As digital threats become more sophisticated, the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) has urged its personnel to stay alert to online deception, emotional manipulation and financial scams. The force has warned that cybercriminals use fake identities to gain trust and steal personal, sensitive and financial information.

Following its Cyber Security Awareness Week, which concluded recently, the SSB issued an advisory asking personnel to be cautious when interacting with strangers online. It advised them not to share private photographs or videos, engage with suspicious video calls or respond to demands for money.

The advisory also warned against installing Android Package Kit (APK) files from unknown sources, as they can compromise mobile devices and expose personal and financial data. Personnel have been advised to download apps only from trusted sources.

The force highlighted how fraudsters use fake identities and emotional manipulation to exploit their targets. It also urged personnel to be careful with unknown calls, fake messages, suspicious links and QR codes. They should never share one-time passwords (OTPs), personal identification numbers (PINs), passwords or banking details.

“Always verify before any transaction,” the advisory stated, stressing the need to confirm the authenticity of requests before acting.

Personnel have been asked to report cyber fraud immediately by calling the national cybercrime helpline at 1930 or filing a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in.

“Stop, think, check, then act,” the force said, reinforcing the importance of caution before responding to suspicious messages or making financial transactions. It concluded with the message: “Stay Alert, Stay Vigilant, Stay Cyber Safe.”

The advisory is part of the SSB’s efforts to improve cyber awareness and promote safer digital practices among its personnel.

The force guards 1,751 km of the India-Nepal border and 699 km of the India-Bhutan border. It was established as the Special Service Bureau on May 15, 1963, following Chinese aggression in 1962. It came under the Ministry of Home Affairs on January 15, 2001, and was assigned responsibility for the India-Nepal border on June 19, 2001. On March 12, 2004, it was also entrusted with guarding the India-Bhutan border.

The SSB’s responsibilities include promoting security among border communities, preventing cross-border crime and unauthorised entry or exit, and curbing smuggling and other illegal activities.
