Japanese automaker Honda has developed a wireless charging system that can power electric vehicles, including heavy trucks, while they are moving. The company plans to test the technology on a Japanese highway to explore new ways to improve electric vehicle charging.

Honda will conduct the trial with construction firm Taisei and road builder Taisei Rotec during the financial year beginning in April 2027 or later, according to its announcement.

The system has been developed by Honda’s research division in collaboration with the 2 companies. It aims to transfer electricity wirelessly from charging units installed beneath road surfaces to vehicles travelling above them. If successful, the technology could reduce the need for frequent charging stops and support longer journeys for electric trucks.

However, the commercial viability of the system remains uncertain. A Honda engineer declined to comment on how its cost would compare with conventional high-speed charging networks, stating that its economic feasibility would need to be assessed.
