Anthropic has introduced Claude Opus 5.5, a new AI model that the company says offers performance close to its top-tier Fable 5.1 while costing 40% less to operate than its previous model.
The launch comes as the AI industry faces growing concerns about the risks linked to rapidly advancing systems. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei earlier this month called on the global AI community to slow the release of new capabilities to address safety concerns.
Anthropic said Opus 5.5 was tested externally by independent AI safety research groups Frontier Design and METR before launch. The model also includes safeguards that were previously limited to the company’s most capable systems.
The company said Opus 5.5 outperformed OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol on a software development benchmark while costing about one-third as much to operate.
Opus 5.5 is priced at $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens. Anthropic said this is 20% cheaper than Opus 5. The model is available through platforms including Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure.
The new model also performed better than earlier systems in Anthropic’s internal safety evaluations. It was about 85% less likely than Opus 5 or Mythos 5.1 to attempt to bypass containment boundaries in a dedicated test, according to the company.
Anthropic said Claude Sonnet 5.5 and Claude Haiku 5.5 will arrive in the coming weeks. The models are expected to bring similar improvements in performance, speed and safety.
The company is also expanding programs that provide vetted cybersecurity and life-sciences researchers with broader access to the new model.
