SES has expanded its presence in India with a 2nd office facility for its global capability centre (GCC) in Chennai. The new facility will support the company’s technical and business operations as it prepares for a commercial entry into India’s satellite communication market.
The centre will work across engineering, technology, network and service operations, software development, cybersecurity and IT. It will also support corporate functions such as HR and finance.
Luxembourg-based SES opened its first Chennai centre in April 2025. Its local workforce has tripled over the past year to more than 600 employees. This includes employees integrated through its acquisition of Intelsat, which has operated in Chennai for more than 5 years.
Adel Al-Saleh, CEO of SES, said the Chennai team had quickly become an integral part of the company’s worldwide network.
The expansion is part of SES’s plan to strengthen its capabilities in India and develop Chennai as a key hub for its global operations, said Vinod Khanna Sekhar, VP of operations and engineering and Chennai site leader at SES.
“The centre plays a key role in helping SES drive innovation and long-term growth.
Our decision to invest in a significantly larger facility reflects both the success of the Chennai operation and our confidence in India’s role within the global space and technology ecosystem,” he said.
The Chennai centre has become a strategic talent hub for engineering and technology professionals. Its teams directly support SES’s global connectivity solutions for enterprises, telecom providers, aviation, maritime and media customers.
SES is also preparing to enter India’s commercial satellite communication market through Orbit Connect India, a joint venture with Jio Platforms. The venture has received approval from IN-SPACe but is awaiting the final regulatory approval from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) before beginning operations.
Al-Saleh said, “We remain confident that the regulatory framework required to unlock the full potential of satellite communications will continue to evolve. We believe it is a question of when, not if, these milestones are reached.”
He further said, “While telecommunications and connectivity remain important growth areas, we also continue to support leading broadcasters, government institutions, and enterprises across the country.”
He added that India’s growing space sector is attracting investment and creating new opportunities for collaboration between established industry players.
The new facility at DLF Cyber City Tech Campus was formally inaugurated by Luxembourg Deputy Prime Minister Xavier Bettel on Tuesday.
