Quick action by the victim and the Chittoor District Cyber Cell helped recover ₹2,22,054 lost in a cyber fraud case within just 2 days.

According to Superintendent of Police Tushar Dudi, a resident of Somala village received a message from an unknown sender stating, “A fine of ₹1,000 has been imposed on your tractor.” The message contained a link that, when opened, installed a fake ‘mParivahan’ app on the victim’s phone.

Minutes after the installation, ₹2,22,054 was debited from his ICICI credit card.

The victim immediately contacted ICICI customer care and reported the incident through the 1930 cybercrime helpline. Acting quickly, the Chittoor District Cyber Cell stopped the banking transactions and took steps to recover the stolen amount.

The SP said: “Thanks to the prompt response of the police and the victim filing a complaint immediately after the crime, the entire amount of ₹2,22,054 was recovered and returned to the victim within just two days.”

Tushar Dudi stressed that immediate reporting is critical in cyber fraud cases. “Victims should not panic after falling prey to cyber fraud; instead, they should call the 1930 cybercrime helpline without any delay.”

He said that when a complaint is filed soon after money is transferred to fraudsters’ accounts, the chances of freezing the funds and recovering the victim’s money increase significantly.

The SP also warned people against opening messages, links, APK files or suspicious applications received from unknown sources. He advised users to verify the authenticity of messages claiming to be from official organisations before opening them.
