Huawei Mate XT 2 gets September 7 launch date and new tri-fold design

Huawei has confirmed that its 2nd-generation tri-fold smartphone, the Mate XT 2, will be unveiled in China on September 7. The company has already opened pre-reservations and revealed the phone’s design, colour options, and RAM and storage variants.

The Mate XT 2 will succeed the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design, which was launched in 2024. Unlike its predecessor’s outward-folding design, the new smartphone will use an inward-folding mechanism. Teaser videos show a design similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold, with the inner display protected when the device is folded.

The phone will feature an octagonal rear camera module and privacy-focused display technology. Huawei says the technology will maintain clear visibility from the front while limiting visibility from wider side angles, helping protect screen content in public places. The device can also be unfolded by double-tapping the outer display.

The Mate XT 2 will use a wing-shaped tri-fold design, with its left and right sections folding inward. The handset is claimed to measure just 3.5mm in thickness. Huawei also claims it is the thinnest and largest foldable smartphone when fully unfolded.

The company says the device comes with a new hinge mechanism and improved resistance to accidental drops.

Pre-reservations are now open through Huawei’s Vmall platform in China. The Mate XT 2 will be offered in 16GB + 512GB and 16GB + 1TB RAM and storage configurations. A special version of the 16GB + 1TB variant will also come with a privacy screen installed.

The smartphone will be available in Dark Black, Jin Zi and Pure White colour options, based on translated Chinese listings.
