Anthropic is expanding the role of AI beyond software with a new framework designed to let AI agents work directly with physical equipment used in scientific research and advanced manufacturing.
The company on Thursday introduced a research preview of the “Model Hardware Standard” (MHS), a framework that allows AI agents to operate laboratory and manufacturing instruments, including microscopes and robotic arms.
According to Anthropic, MHS can enable agents to coordinate multiple devices and handle complex tasks. These could range from routine drug discovery experiments to laser calibration on a quantum computer.
By combining agentic AI with physical hardware, Anthropic aims to help researchers and engineers run autonomous workflows around the clock with limited human intervention. The company said this could help speed up research and manufacturing processes.
The framework is designed to work with any device that has a programmable interface. It also allows AI agents and connected devices to communicate across networks.
Anthropic said it is providing an early version of MHS to partners. The goal is to develop and test safety evaluations before the framework is eventually made open source.
