Tamil Nadu is set to broaden its AI strategy with plans for a dedicated commercial entity to manage revenue-generating assets linked to the state’s AI economy. The proposed Tamil Nadu AI Vision (TNAIV) will function as the commercial arm of the expanded mission.
According to the IT department’s policy document, TNAIV will manage commercial assets such as concessions, leases, state computer services offered on commercial terms and equity participation in project companies.
The government also plans to use datasets and data exchange platforms to support the licensing and non-profit commercialisation of intellectual property.
The state had announced in its maiden budget that the Tamil Nadu AI Mission would be expanded to include quantum computing and the animation, visual effects, gaming and comics (AVGC) sectors. The mission will be revamped, while a Section 8 company will be incorporated as its public-focused body.
Speaking during the demands for grants session, Minister R Kumar said the mission would establish centres of excellence in areas including healthcare, agriculture and manufacturing.
The government is also adopting AI across various areas to improve governance and service delivery. It plans to develop a Tamil-centric large language model and build AI skills among large sections of the population.
The policy document outlines a wider AI ecosystem that will include innovation hubs, laboratories, test beds, studios, high-performance computing infrastructure and communication networks. This will also include a quantum communication corridor.
The state plans to study technology-related challenges and opportunities and develop policy recommendations based on its findings.
The revamped mission was originally proposed by the DMK government and included plans for a dedicated AI City and greater adoption of AI in governance.
