The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Central Board has been expanded with the appointment of 3 part-time, non-official directors, bringing additional expertise in finance, economic policy and international affairs.
The Government of India has appointed Janmejaya Kumar Sinha, Syed Akbaruddin and Annie George Mathew to the Central Board for a 4-year term, effective August 24, 2026, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
The appointments were approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) under Section 8(1)(c) of the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934. With the appointments, the strength of the RBI Central Board has increased from 11 to 14 members.
Annie George Mathew, former Special Secretary in the Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance, brings more than 3 decades of experience in public finance, financial management, government audit and accounts. She is also a full-time member of the Sixteenth Finance Commission.
Janmejaya Kumar Sinha, an economist and management consultant, has held senior leadership roles at Boston Consulting Group, including Chairman of BCG Asia-Pacific. He has also served on government and regulatory committees dealing with financial-sector reforms.
Syed Akbaruddin, a former Indian diplomat, served as India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and as spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs.
The appointments add experience across public finance, economic policy, corporate strategy, financial-sector reforms and international diplomacy to the RBI’s Central Board.
