YouTube updates public view counts with a new playback-based system

YouTube is changing its public view-counting system to make video performance metrics more consistent across the platform. The updated method will take effect globally from August 24, 2026.

Under the new system, a public view will be counted as soon as a video starts playing, from its very first frame. The change is intended to give creators a clearer and more consistent way to measure how their videos perform.

A Google employee confirmed the update on a YouTube Help page and said it will not affect creator earnings or eligibility for the YouTube Partner Program (YPP).

YouTube acknowledged that it has used different systems to count views across various video formats. The company said creators wanted less confusion when measuring their reach and exposure.

The platform’s original view metric, called “Engaged views,” will continue to be available. Creator earnings will also remain based on “Engaged Shorts views” and “Engaged Watch Hours” metrics.

“Last year, we updated how we count public views for Shorts to better capture how viewers watch on YouTube. Now, we’re aligning all other video formats to this same standard for consistency across the platform. Beginning on 8/24/2026, a view will be counted the moment a video begins to play—from the very first frame. This standard will now apply globally across all formats,” YouTube stated.
